The GUARDIAN project begins the works of the hydraulic infrastructure that will allow the use of reclaimed water

GUARDIAN begins building its hydraulic infrastructure: preparing the site of the water regeneration plant (ERA) and the pipe to the first tank.

The GUARDIAN project, aimed at increasing resilience to fires in an urban forest interface area of the Turia y la Vallesa Natural Park, this week started the hydraulic infrastructure execution phase.

Thus, among the actions that will be carried out in the coming weeks, is the adaptation of the area where the Water Regeneration Station (ERA) will be installed, which will be located in the Camp de Turia II WWTP. The ERA is a compact plant that will be housed inside a maritime container and its assembly is being carried out in a workshop by a specialized company. During the second half of November it will be transported to its site, for which it is necessary to carry out preliminary work on the initial adaptation of the land, hydraulic connections and electrical power.

The function of the ERA is, specifically, to subject the water to specific treatments once it has been purified so that it has sufficient quality to be reused, with special attention to the elimination of emerging pollutants.

Likewise, in this phase of the project the completion of the first phase of the hydraulic infrastructure is planned that will allow the transport of water from the ERA to the first storage tank.

The GUARDIAN project partner entities that have participated in this phase of the project are, on the one hand, CETAQUA, as the company in charge of designing the ERA, as well as Hidraqua, responsible for the construction of the ERA and the design and execution of the rest of the hydraulic infrastructures that will allow the use of reclaimed water.

The complete hydraulic infrastructure is designed to be executed in different phases. Thus, it is expected that before next summer all of them can be completed and the first tests can be started to verify the correct functioning of the fire prevention and defense system of the urban-forest interface of the Turia Natural Park and the municipalities of Riba-roja de Túria and Paterna.

Guardian Project

The GUARDIAN Project was selected in the 3rd UIA Urban Innovative Actions call of the European Union. An initiative that aims to facilitate the implementation of new solutions to the urban challenges facing today’s society.

GUARDIAN is a clear example of the importance of Partnerships, SDG 17, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN within the 2030 agenda. Thus, the Riba-roja and Paterna City Councils participate in the project, with Riba-roja as the lead authority. In addition to the two municipalities, Hidraqua, Cetaqua, Medi XXI, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of València participate as partners in the GUARDIAN project.

A replicable solution

GUARDIAN shows that reclaimed water can protect the wildland-urban interface. Let us know if you would like to apply it in your municipality.
